Silicone Prop FX 1 Day Intensive Workshop


In this intensive hands-on workshop taught by FX Artist & instructor Dallas Harvey students will learn professional life-casting, silicone casting, silicone fabrication, and silicone painting techniques. At the end of the course students will leave with a realistic painted silicone prop severed finger that can be used for film or portfolio piece.

Part 1: Lifecasting & Body Casting

The instructor will demonstrate how to lifecast on a live model creating a hand cast. The class will then cast their own fingers to make a small alginate mold of their own. Actor safety, casting tips and professional use of products will be discussed in detail.

Part 2: Silicone Mixing & Casting

Silicone Props The instructor will demonstrate a high pour and a brush up methods as well as color theory with specialized silicone paints and pigments. Students will learn how mix a realistic flesh tone and either brush or pour their silicone to create the final prop severed finger.

Part 3: Silicone Gore & Casualty Fabrication

Once the students prop is casted they will then learn how to fabricate additional wounds and textures to create film quality gore and casualty FX.

Part 4: Silicone FX Painting

The Instructor will teach the students easy ways to paint flesh tones with Industry standard paints, tints and pigments and how to appropriately matte and gloss the finished prop for a realistic, flawless finish.

This course will teach you important skills and techniques for a professional career as a make-up effects artist. This training will help you learn valuable techniques that can earn you more money, and get you more work as a professional make-up effects artist. Upgrade your skills and portfolio!

About The Instructor

Dallas Harvey - Instructor & FX Artist

Dallas Harvey
is a special effects artist who creates in both practical and digital FX mediums. He has over 15 years of digital concept & 3D design experience and is a special effects artist & sculptor for TV, Film & Music video productions.

He is a graduate of the 3D Computer Animation, Visual Effects and Game Design Program at Think Tank Training Centre. Dallas is also the author and instructed the Digital Make-up Design curriculum for make-up & fashion school Blanche Macdonald Centre. In 2015 he was a LEO Award nominee for "Best Make-up in a Short Drama" for Telefilm Canada sci-fi production Gord's Brother.

In addition to being key FX artist on many film productions his practical make-up, prosthetics and digital design work has been published numerous times in world-renowned Make-up Artist Magazine. Dallas is a twice published author in the "Lab Tech" section of the magazine, and has been curator of the IMATS Vancouver Make-Up Museum (2012-2014).

Most recently Dallas has been working on The Exorcist for Fox TV network puppeteering custom builds, creating realistic props, silicone body duplicates, blood rigging, dental acrylic teeth, custom sculpting fabrication and concept design.

Dallas is the founder of Vancouver FX Studio where he designs and consults on local and international TV, Film & Music Video productions.
